The main advantage with my camera is the much cleaner noise in low lighting, the large dedicated flash, RAW shooting mode, rapid shooting, and instantly ability to impress people and even make the photographer appear sexy. It is an expensive investment and bulky setup. It's probably more worth your while to learn some photography concepts and guidelines, and how to use the controls in your camera to that effect. There are some quite good compact cameras, for instance I've read some positive things about the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3.
